Diggin' in the Cybercrates: Internet Samples, Volume 4

On the regular, Hip Hapa hooks you into the sites and sounds of the virtual world, offering up samples to help you make the perfect mix of your netsurfing. If you find a gem that needs inclusion, let us know and we'll post it.

Don't think you are forgotten, Chicago. Way to keep immigration issues in the public consciousness through mass demonstration.

Speaking of Chicago, my old community league basketball teammates back there were trying to pump each other up for the playoffs with this little piece of awesomeness. It didn't work, but you should check it out anyway.

And speaking of basketball, I've decided I need to start pulling for the local hopeless cause. At least I have a place to go to support the habit.

Finally, I came across this interview with ?uestlove today. The words are interesting enough, but this, I think, is the real highlight:

Ozomatli at Stern Grove

The Hip Hapa braintrust took in Ozomatli and Crown City Rockers at Stern Grove in San Francisco this weekend. A photo and a couple of links is all we're able to offer right now as we get back into the swing of things.

Oh, and the concert was free. Man, what a crazy state this California is. Free concerts? What's next, responsible environmental legislation?

I Leave and the Whole City Falls Apart

Okay, so we’ve been lax on the posting – gomen, ne! The last month has been all about moving from Chicago to Oakland and starting a new job, so I haven’t had much time for Internet rabble-rousing. However, a friend back in the Midwest gave me a reason to get back into the game. His name is Brandon, and I’ll let him take it from here:

This morning I was driving to work and listening as I usually do to Power 92.3, a hip-hop and r&b radio station based out of Hammond, Indiana. I am still shocked to recall what I heard.

The dj is named Trey The Choklit Jok and his co-host is Kendra G. After they all had an enlightening discussion about the current immigration issue, Trey says, “and now for another issue... never go to Asia. I'm never going to go to China, or Japan or any other Asian country because AIDS is spreading over there. There are a large number of homosexuals. And they're married. They don’t tell their wives and then they have sex with their wives while they have AIDS.” Kendra then says, “They have anal sex over there and it's considered sacred. Condoms aren't that popular there.”

After a brief pause for the traffic report, Trey went further by saying, “So the lesson for today: don’t go to Asia. They’re killing cats and dogs and eating ‘um. They’re spreading AIDS. And last, all of the birds have the flu.” Kendra follows him by saying, “Asia is not all that bad, you could go over there and meet a smart, intelligent woman.”

They must’ve hit all of the major stereotypes in a matter of 30 seconds. I'm still in shock. This happened at 8:56 this morning.

WOW!

I encourage everyone to write to Power 92 and express your outrage as I am doing at the moment. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.

So Brandon’s original message went out to a couple of local listservs, and he included his email address in that last sentence so that people would indeed be encouraged to contact him. I’m not going to include it here, though, cuz I think that would increase the amount of spam he’d get, but if you hit us up through this site, I’ll put you in contact with him. And feel free to post thoughts here.
